As a production papermaker, I respond to the world around me in color and texture. At any one time I will have several buckets of colored pulp and mix them in the vat until I have a color that pleases me. Bits of fiber from walks in the woods or along the sea find their way into some of the papers--tufts of cattail, small pieces of lichens. Never satisfied for long, the vat will metamorphose from one color to the next with all the steps between the two. The result is a rich palette of handmade papers in many different hues.
Other artists use my papers but much of the paper finds its way into the custom lampshades I manufacture. What sets my colored lampshades apart from commercially available ones is the use of lightfast pigments to color the pulp. My papers are archival and the lampshades made from them will outlive silk and other commercial shades.
Stop by my gallery in Brooklin just at the top of Center Harbor and see the variety of one-of-a-kind lamps embellished by paper shades.
